Secondary Chords Explained

by Scott Watson on Mar 20, 2015

Often accidentals are introduced to make the listener feel as though he/she is in a different key. An F sharp introduced in the key of C major suggests that G will be tonicized. If the F sharp is part of a D-F#-A chord, we say that chord is the "dominant of the dominant" since it would be the dominant in the key of G. The Roman numeral chord symbol for this uses a slash: V/V.
