Keeping Parents in the Loop

a story from Bonnie Odd

“Parents want to be involved, but they don’t always know how... This brings them right into the classroom, without embarrassing their kids.”

Explaining Math the “Right Way”

As any parent who’s tried it will attest, helping a child with math homework can be a frustrating experience for everyone involved. Even for parents who can still tell their hyperbolas from their parabolas, explaining a concept differently than a child’s teacher often results in more frustration and confusion. You might expect that math teachers get to avoid these challenges with their own kids, but according to 7th grade math teacher Bonnie Odd, even math teachers aren’t immune.

“I can teach math. My own son is a fifth grade student and he’ll have problems with his math, and when I try to help him, he’ll say, ‘you’re not explaining it the right way. My teacher didn’t do it that way.’ Educreations solves that problem, because the parents can sit down and watch my videos and know exactly how I’ve explained something in class.“

“I tell the kids it’s for them, but it’s really for their parents. The parents are way on my side because of the app.”

Be There, Even When You’re Not

“Sixth grade is the first year parents are letting go of their kids. Parents want to be involved, but they don’t know how. They want to know their kid’s teachers. With Educreations they can stay in the loop. This brings them right into the classroom, without embarrassing their kids.”

“I also use it when I have to be absent. During the very first week of school, I had to be absent. I didn’t know my kids very well, I didn’t know my sub, but there were some things I really wanted them to learn. So I made a 25 minute video for every day and I told the sub to play the videos in class. So I was able to teach my students, even when I was gone.”

“And it’s wonderful if a kid’s sick. I had a couple kids who missed a week, and they could watch my lessons on the airplane, or wherever.”

For Odd, using Educreations to provide parents a window into her classroom has completely changed her interactions with parents. “When parents are upset with a teacher, the number one complaint is, ‘you’re not helping my kid enough.’ The few times I have an upset parent come in to speak with me, I show them all the videos I’ve posted online, and parents totally love me for that. It completely changes the conversation.”

“I tell the kids it’s for them, but it’s really for their parents. The parents are way on my side because of Educreations.”
